This is exactly how the texts for the Traumleser mini-courses are chosen: they seem to fall into my hands and naturally guide my thinking. Yesterday I happened to be watching an interview with Mario Rigoni Stern on Rai Storia, and suddenly I knew which text would come next. Il sergente nella neve was lying (by chance?) on my living room table. Early this morning I started looking for the specific passage that Rigoni Stern had mentioned in the interview. The book is small, and on page 109 I found exactly what I was looking for. A perfect passage for a new mini-course: It's one of those lines you want to memorise - words that stay with you because they move you. Goethe said something similar: "The whole poem (Jerusalem Delivered), it is true, I could not read; but there were passages which I learned by heart, and the images expressed in these hovered round me". Join me this week (5 February - 9 February 2025) as I translate this passage from Rigoni Stern's worthy book from Italian into German. These weekly mini-courses are not only in preparation for the second semester (starting 17 February 2025), but are also open to all language and literature enthusiasts.
